...for lack of a better title

If you haven't yet seen the Swedish film Let The Right One In, you really should. It's a wonderful film about a troubled twelve year old boy and his relationship a twelve year old girl who turns out to be neither. As great a film as it is, if you were to run out right now and pick up the DVD, you might find yourself wondering what exactly is the big deal. You might even be pretty disappointed in the film. That is, unless you speak Swedish (or can tolerate dubbing). Because if you don't, you're going to need the English subtitles, and that is where your movie experience is likely to head straight down the tubes.
You can Google “let the right one in subtitles” and find any number of articles and online forums talking about the outcry over the dumbing-down of the DVD subs versus the original theatrical subs. Long story short, they're fairly atrocious. They eliminate a good third of the dialog, and are entirely lacking in any nuance or character. Major scenes in the film lose their point entirely. Sadly I didn't learn about any of this until I'd already watched the DVD and found myself disappointed with the film, and not knowing why. But having read a few of the aforementioned articles, I soon understood, and set about the task of seeing this movie properly.
So, not having any means of obtaining a disc with the theatrical subs, and being the occasionally-industrious nerd that I am, I went about learning how to replace subtitles on a DVD. After many failed attempts I finally nailed the process, and soon had a disc image with the theatrical subs ready to burn. But once I discover a new superpower like subtitle replacement, it's just not like me to use it for its intended purpose and walk away. I have to go a step further. So I decided to customize my own subtitle track for Let The Right One In. This decision was not intended to portray the theatrical subs as somehow inadequate -- they tell the story well. But like most subtitle tracks, they don't come across entirely natural for one of two reasons:
1) The translator speaks the foreign language fluently, but is a bit shaky when it comes to English.
2) The translator speaks both languages well, but is more interested in providing a straight translation than attempting to give the subs any kind of dramatic value. This may be a matter of indifference, or it may be a restriction imposed by the film distributor. I'm not faulting anyone, I'm just making an observation.
Apparently I'm not alone in my dissatisfaction with the theatrical subs. I've read more than one native Swedish speaker on some Internet forum claiming that while they're better than the DVD subs, they're still rather weak. So I started reviewing the subs, checking only spelling and formatting at first, but soon finding many places where, my lack of Swedish aside, I thought I could improve things. Typically my changes fall into three categories:
1) The original subtitle doesn't sound like anything a human would actually say. Some of these subs are better suited to LOLcats than to characters in a movie like this one.
2) The phonetics of the spoken dialog are such that the subtitle could easily be conformed to match far more closely, without altering the meaning. It's already unnatural to have to read while watching a movie, but it's easier if the spoken and subtitled lines are phonetically similar, or at least close in length. Example, Eli asks Oskar if his Rubik's cube is a puzzle. She asks this in two, maybe three words, the third of which is clearly "puzzle." So the obvious translation would be "Is it a puzzle?" or "It's a puzzle?". The theatrical subs say "Is it some kind of a puzzle?" Way too many words for the spoken line, most of them unnecessary, making the subtitle more likely to pull you out of the film.
3) The subtitled dialog just doesn't make any sense. This happens a few times during LTROI. In this case it would obviously be preferable to understand Swedish; but since that's not an option, I did my best to provide dialog that, in my opinion and by my understanding, better conveys the point of the scene.
Out of respect, I created my disc image with the theatrical subs on track 1, so they appear when you select "English" on the subtitle menu. To access my custom subs, you have to select "Spanish." That allows me to feel a wee bit less arrogant about presuming to resubtitle someone else's movie.
What follows is a side-by-side comparison of the theatrical subs to my custom subs. I've highlighted my changes in blue, and I've attempted to provide some justification, or at least explanation, of the more significant changes. Many changes are simply a more natural word choice, so I don't bother explaining every little tweak. I consider this an open-ended project, so if you feel I've really dropped the ball on any of these, I'd be eager to hear your opinions.

This whole scene was tough. The original subs really make no sense, and it's a little hard to tell what they should be. I felt it was important for this scene to reinforce Lacke's heartbreak over Jocke's death, and to introduce his thoughts of going after Eli. Ironically, line 270 is the one place the “botched” DVD subtitles and I agree. Lacke grabs the sleeping Ginia's shoulder and shakes—“A kid” strikes me as a very odd thing to say. |

[Mr. Avila, in broken Swedish] |
Again, the humor of the next few moments relies on us remembering that Mr. Avila doesn't speak very fluent Swedish. I included his name this time, as one of the other teachers addresses him by surname only (no honorific) and I found it confusing, since we haven't heard Avila's name prior to this. |

I don't like lines showing up too early. Then you're anticipating the spoken line, and hearing the actor act it rather than experiencing it in real time. It's a prime contributor to the tendency of subtitles to pull you out of a film. |

- Jocke and I were this close. |
- Jocke and I, we were like this. |
I think it needs to be more clear that the second line is Gösta talking about going to the police. Gösta and Lacke are having two different conversations, it gets a bit confusing. |

- Oh, Lacke... |
- Oh, Lacke... |
This exchange is by far the most difficult to tackle: Lacke's first line is way longer than “Stop it!” I think it needs a little extra. In his next line, he so clearly says “Lacke, Lacke”, it feels odd to have the subs say anything else. And whatever his third line ends up being, it has to be fairly devastating to Ginia (and it would be nice if it ended in “ice cold” to better match the dialog). This line had to be pretty prickish to drive her out of the scene in anger. I had to get a bit creative to make this exchange work, but I think it's an improvement. |

This scene is a bit difficult. My research indicates that the other man is Dad's drinking buddy, and that alcoholism is a point of great shame in Sweden. Alcholics commonly drink together. I'm not sure how to better convey that point. |

You have a lot of rings. |
The collection of rings isn't especially obvious in the frame. This change helps draw attention to them, and sounds more natural. |
